Benefits Eligibility - Dependent Benefits
Never Married Disabled Children, Age 26 or Older
Your unmarried children by birth, adoption, or children of your spouse or other qualified adult who:
- Are not classified as principally supported children; and
- Have reached the end of the month in which they turn age 26 and are covered as your dependent under a university group health plan; and,
- Are incapable of self-support due to a mental or physical disability incurred prior to age 26; and,
- Are chiefly dependent upon you, your spouse or eligible other qualified adult for support and maintenance (50%+ support); and,
- Are not eligible for coverage as an employee or are not already covered through the university as the dependent on another university employee’s coverage; and
- Application for extended coverage due to dependent’s disability must be submitted within 31 days of the date the dependent reaches age 26.
A new hire or newly eligible employee with a disabled child over age 26 may also apply for coverage for that child when first enrolling for coverage, provided that: the child’s disability began before the child turned age 26, the child has had continuous group medical coverage since age 26 and such proof of coverage is provided when application is made.

The University of Michigan in its sole discretion may modify, amend, or terminate the benefits provided with respect to any individual receiving benefits, including active employees, retirees, and their dependents. Although the university has elected to provide these benefits this year, no individual has a vested right to any of the benefits provided. Nothing in these materials gives any individual the right to continued benefits beyond the time the university modifies, amends, or terminates the benefit. Anyone seeking or accepting any of the benefits provided will be deemed to have accepted the terms of the benefits programs and the university's right to modify, amend or terminate them.
